Abstract

This study aims to identify, determine the factors that influence and describe the teacher's efforts to overcome the difficulties of learning arithmetic division operations for fourth grade students. The type of research used in this research is qualitative. The subjects of this research are students who have difficulty learning arithmetic operations as many as 6 students and fourth grade Mathematics teachers. Data collection techniques in this study used descriptive qualitative data analysis techniques with the method of observation sheets, interviews and documentation. The results showed that 1) difficulties in learning division arithmetic operations included: (1) difficulties in understanding the concept of division, (2) difficulties in division procedures (algorithms), (3) difficulties in remembering the basic facts of division arithmetic operations, (4) difficulties in connecting place value understanding. in the multilevel division operation, (5) difficulty in writing the order of the divisor and the divided numbers in symbolic (abstract) form, (6) difficulty in distinguishing the symbols of arithmetic operations. 2) The factors behind the difficulty of learning division arithmetic operations consist of internal factors and external factors. 3) Ways to overcome difficulties in learning arithmetic division operations include, among others, introducing the concept of division in two situations, namely measurement and partition; carry out the learning process according to the learning stages of elementary school students in the concrete period according to Piaget's learning theory; using Dienes Block props; using a short division algorithm strategy with a combination of alternative explicit exchange methods and chunking methods; foster students' attention and interest in learning with educational games
